Light for aquaria ? intensifies the colour of your fish and plants

TROCAL Kombi fluorescent tubes have a special UV-STOP protective foil. It filters out the ultraviolet rays below 400 nm. Now you can illuminate your aquaria with UV-free light. It is quite similar to nature where the green foliage roof of the jungle holds back the short waved ultraviolet rays. Long waved light rays, such as e.g. red or infrared can easily ?swing around? the leaves and can thus arrive at the bottom.

During the last years important new facts were gained on the lighting of aquaria: In principle it can be said that plants as well as algae will grow under practically all light colours ? however with some small but not insignificant differences.

Matters of interest on the history of evolution of algae and aquatic plants: Algae are the oldest inhabitants of our planet. The first organisms, similar to blue-green algae, existed 3.5 billion (3.500.000.000) years ago. Green and red algae evolved later. The higher plants which our aquarium plants belong to, developed much later.

Important to know: Most types of algae have always lived in water right up to today. In contrast today s aquatic plants are nearly all descendants of plants which in the course of their development left the water. They grew for millions of years above water - frequently as under-tree plants in the marshy premaeval forests. These species are known as weak-light plants. Just like all undergrowth plants, the aquatic and swamp plants had to adapt to the light filtered by high trees, which has less blue and red and hardly any UV content. These species of plants only re-colonised the water much later.

Under natural conditions aquarium plants often grow in the shade or semi-shade of trees, where the green canopy cover of the primaeval forest holds back the majority of blue and UV rays.
